Brother Martin High School Continues St. Joseph’s Day Altar Tradition
Brother Martin High School continued our tradition of hosting the annual St. Joseph’s Day Altar in the James B. Branton Chapel on Friday, March 18th and Saturday, March 19th in celebration of St. Joseph, the patron Saint of the Universal Church, fathers and husbands, workers, and happy death. A Sicilian tradition, creating altars for St. Joseph’s Day dates back to the Middle Ages. According to legend, Sicily was experiencing a severe drought, so citizens prayed to St. Joseph to relieve them of this famine. To show their gratitude, the citizens prepared a table with a special assortment of foods they had harvested.
Prior to the opening of the altar for public viewing, Fr. Anthony Taormina blessed the altar. The Brother Martin community had the opportunity to express their gratitude for their blessings at the altar. In the tradition of St. Joseph, visitors were treated to blessed bread, a fava “lucky” bean, a St. Joseph prayer card, and cookies.
Thank you to everyone who assisted with the altar preparations and to all of our sponsors!
