Brother Martin Key Club and NJROTC Participate in the Out of the Darkness Walk
Each year, suicide claims more lives than war, murder, and natural disasters combined. Yet suicide prevention doesn’t receive anywhere near the funding as other leading causes of death. The Out of the Darkness Walk benefits the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention by raising awareness on suicide and depression, raising money for research and education to prevent suicide from taking place, and providing assistance and a safe outlet for survivors of suicide.
This year, the Out of the Darkness Walk took place in Audubon Park on October 26, 2019. The Brother Martin Key Club and NJROTC helped set up, presented the colors, participated in the walk, and helped clean up after the event. Students spoke with local officials and inspirational speakers on how they can help raise awareness and help anyone in need. One of the participants, An Dinh ‘23, said, “It was truly inspiring. Suicide prevention has a personal spot in my heart so being able to participate in the event was such a great experience for me. I really enjoyed it.”
Participation in this walk is just another facet of the Suicide Prevention education program that is offered at Brother Martin High School. We are proud of those students who participated in and applaud their service to our greater community. The knowledge that these students gained will be passed on to many others in our school community.
