Seniors Visit with 8th Grade Classes about Lent

DSC09152One of the most important responsibilities of the Student Ministry Team at Brother Martin is the 8th Grade Visit Program.  These visits allow seniors to openly share their experiences with and impart knowledge on young Crusaders. To help students in their transition from grammar school to Brother Martin, Senior Student Ministers regularly visit their group of eighth graders.

Before the Mardi Gras break, we visited our groups in their religion classes and discussed the underlying themes of Mardi Gras and Lent. We conversed about the significance and history of Mardi Gras celebrations; I was surprised that many people thought that Fat Tuesday festivities only took place in New Orleans. Another major symbol of the Lenten season that we discussed was the symbolic nature of ashes. On Ash Wednesday, we as Christians get ashes on our forehead in the shape of a cross. The ashes symbolize the fact that, as humans, our physical bodies may decompose, but our souls will live forever. I feel that the visit went well and that these visits truly do make a difference.
